Elvet House and the surrounding land is set up as a small holding, with the ultimate goal of becoming self sufficient. Both Esther and Jeremiah have grown up in the city so have had to learn all about farming, growing crops, looking after the animals etc. The aim is to grow enough crops to feed our family and the children in the Saturday Club and also have some to sell at the local markets. Our crops currently include matooke, cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, beans, nuts and oranges.
We have 730 chickens, 4 cows, 15 goats and 30 pigs. Most children lack protein in their diet so the eggs from the chickens are really important. We use these to feed our Elvet House children and the Saturday Club children. We hope to soon be able to have enough to take to market to sell.
